Mathematical Communication course material
This is the former course home page for MA1610 Mathematical Communication. The syllabus for this course can be found here. Unless otherwise stated, all files are in .pdf format.
Coursework assignments
There will be four assessed courseworks this year.
Handouts
So far I have handed out notes on mathematical english, on Cantor's diagonal argument, and on predicates.
Books
There are a few books which correspond loosely to the material in the course, though none are a substitute for attending the lectures. Some examples are
- Velleman: How to prove it (CUP)
- Sundstrom: Mathematical reasoning (Prentice Hall)
- O'Leary: The structure of proof (Prentice Hall)
One of the aims of this course is to explain how to write mathematics clearly. Many of the same principles apply when writing plain English; a classic guide being The Elements of Style by William Strunk.
