Descritption of Earthquakes |
This is the introductory section of this guide, dedicated to earthquake resistant construction.
The earth's structure is briefly explained and the subject of plate tectonics is discussed. Different types of plate boundaries are
explained and the causes behind earthquakes. The way earthquakes propagate in the earth's crust and the difference between the magnitude and
intensity of an earthquake are also covered.
In the second part of this section the behaviour of low-rise wall houses during earthquakes is explained.
The various ways low-rise houses resist horizontal shaking are discussed. The influence of the house
shape and planning is explained. Common earthquake damage to such houses is covered. Finally the importance
of ductility is emphasised and a way to construct ductile houses is shown. |
