Descritption of Adobe masonry houses
This part of the system focuses on the adobe masonry for non-engineered low-cost housing. Adobe masonry construction systems are common in many earthquake prone parts of the world. It is widespread throughout Indian Subcontinent (except the high rainfall areas), Iran and the Middle East as well as in Latin America. Adobe masonry wall houses are highly vulnerable in moderate and high-seismicity areas. However safe construction can be achieved when observing simple guidelines and rules for quality and performance.

The information will apply to planning and detailing of new houses and improving the existing ones. Adobe masonry walls reinforced with canes, bamboo or steel rebars are also covered in this section. Guidance is also provided for strengthening (rehabilitation) of the existing adobe housing stock. Post earthquake strengthening (retrofit) of adobe houses is briefly discussed.
