Descritption of Brick masonry houses
This part of the system focuses on housing with lateral load resisting path consisting of clay brick masonry walls. The traditional, long-practised, non-engineered form of this construction being plain i.e. unreinforced brick masonry wall houses. This is a brittle form of masonry construction and consequently vulnerable to earthquakes. Limitations of plain brick masonry are discussed and structure for earthquake-resistant construction is provided.
Confined masonry walls, an improved type of masonry construction is introduced and procedure for earthquake-resistant confined masonry construction is given.
Finally, reinforced brick masonry construction type is discussed and its application to low-rise residential houses explained.
The information will apply to new construction planning, design and detailing.
