Descritption of Stone masonry houses
This part of the system focuses on the stone masonry residential housing. The use of stone for new residential construction i.e. house with lateral load resisting path consisting of stone masonry walls is not widespread however in areas where good quality natural stone is in abundance such type of construction exists. Different types of plain stone masonry are covered in the section. Traditional, long practised forms like uncoursed rubble stone masonry, also referred to as field stone masonry as well as coursed dimensioned cut-stone masonry are discussed. Earthquake resistant aspects are analysed and improved form of stone masonry is discussed. The latter being a stone masonry walls confined by means of RC members and possibly timber members. The information will be helpful for planning, design and detailing of new houses. Improvements over the traditional form of this type of construction are emphasised throughout the document.
