WORKSHOP 3: WORKING WITH SENSITIVE ISSUES AND VULNERABLE GROUPS
Birmingham, January 12th, 2009

This course will be an opportunity to develop the counselling skills we already have, understand some theory, try out different approaches and develop the confidence to go a little bit further in conversations with young people without feeling overwhelmed. We will think together about some of the unspoken communication between people, the things not said, the feelings buried or disguised. Although there will be some theoretical input, the emphasis of the day will be practical and experiential. We will share ideas, experiences and learn together.

The facilitator is Nick Luxmoore. Nick has worked as a teacher, youth worker and counsellor with young people for 30 years both in community and school settings. For three years he worked as a psychotherapist with young asylum seekers in Oxford. He is the author of 'Listening to young people in school, youth work and counselling' (Jessica Kingsley 2000), 'Working with anger and young people' (Jessica Kingsley 2006) and 'Feeling like crap: young people and the meaning of self-esteem' (Jessica Kingsley 2008).
