To join the course:

Before you select one of these courses and if you don’t know your level in French you may need to test your competence by doing a placement test. This can be done on-line. Once you have completed and sent the test you will be contacted within 24 hours with the outcome and your current level of competence.

The online course works like this:

Once you are registered you will received a login name and password so that you can log into City Online Learning where our course is running. Each term you can study the equivalent of ten lessons named units. Each unit has sections which train a particular skill such as reading, writing, pronunciation or listening. Each week you need to complete a unit so that you can finish one level of competence within the academic year. If you fall behind, it is not the end of the world as you can study at your own pace anyway.

The objective is to complete each level within a period of nine months:

For those who wish to take the LGP examination, it generally takes place after the Easter break.

Completion of the language portfolio will be based on the use of the European Language Portfolio (ELP). This should take one session. You will be supported throughout the course so that you can put your dossier together.

The portfolio can be used as proof of your competence for future employers or learning institutions. If you wish to further your education abroad the portfolio reflects your linguistic competence and is a proof that you can study in a foreign language. Here you can read more information on the ELP

Technical requirements needed to follow the course are:

As the course is on City Online Learning you will need to have access to this. Additionally, if you are using one of the labs at City University you will need a pair of headphones for units with audio files and elsewhere you must have access to an MP3 player and audio speakers/headphones. The audio files are MP3s and must be downloaded to be listened to.

The time you need to spend studying to complete the course:

The target to complete the course at one level of competence is one academic year. You need to study 10 units per term. It’s up to you to find the best timetable to complete the 20 units of each course. On average if you spend a couple of hours on each unit per week you should be able to finish within the first two terms and take the final LGP examination on time around May.

To help you to reach this target you will receive a weekly study plan. You will also need some extra time to revise and memorize vocabulary or new grammatical elements. You can also take part in the weekly chat room sessions and the mystery throughout the year.

You will be able to have contact with other students on the course:

Every week you will be asked to take part in a discussion about the future of the characters. You will be able to decide what happens to them and all the participants as a team will decide how the storyline should go. This section is called "Feuilleton savoneux". ICON needed

There is also a series of questions under the section "Squelette dans le placard" the equivalent of your skeleton in the cupboard every week. You will need to use your little grey cells to solve this weekly puzzle related to the topics studied on that particular week. ICON needed.

If you wish to participate in the "Feuilleton savoneux" and "Squelette dans le placard", you will interact with others students and the course tutor.

You will be assessed

You can take the final examination of the Languages for General Purposes at the end of April or beginning of May. You will be informed throughout the year about the preparation required to succeed and complete this final test.

During the course you will practise your skills with the help of exercises. Some of them will be marked. These marks and the one obtained in the final exam will give an average mark for your certificate.

The marks and the assessment of your competence will be recorded in the The European Language Portfolio(ELP). This will constitute part of the requirements needed to complete the ELP. Here you can read more details on the ELP
