Welcome to Speech in Grammatical Action.

I have been talking a lot about different elements of the sentence, clauses, and phrases. It is now time to look at how these nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives and prepositions or conjunctions are working in these structures.

To start off this section on Speech in Action, here is some introductory information about the concepts that this section deals with in detail.

To communicate with one another it is essential to create a structure with some kind of meaning.
In grammar jargon you speak about sentence, syntax and semantics, the three Ss if you wish to give them a name. These are described on the next page. Then, throughout the section they are further broken down into their constituent parts and the function that each part plays in a sentence is described in detail.
