List members often wonder who the contributors to a discussion are. Where in the world are they, what post do they hold, etc.? So that we can find out a little more about each other, I have prepared this 'Who are they?' page.

I qualified in aromatherapy, reflexology, etc. I studied shamanism and healing methods with the Mohawk Indians in Canada and I am now an assistant professor of Nursing in Japan, my PhD study is in Education, forms of knowing, embodied forms of knowledge and Holistic Nursing.

My passion for primary mental health care (prevention, treatment and promotion of mental health within primary care) led me into a post grad in public health (Health Visiting). Having worked in a number of trusts I continue to be dismayed that primary mental health care is not seen as important and is usually an area of neglect.

I'm branch treasurer for the ANZ College of MHNs in WA and am representative to the national Council for the College Although I have spent my career predominately in acute adult mental health inpatient services, I have also worn several other hats including: sole practitioner community mental health nurse for a small regional clinic, lecturer at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, public health clinician, opened a statewide inpatient service for adolescents, managed a 25 bed private service. Currently coordinator of nursing services at Fremantle Hospital in WA. My interests include perinatal mental health, emergency mental health services, healthcare management and computing.

Looking for contacts in Melbourne, Australia area as I hope to visit there on a family holiday next year and would like to spend a little time with some ECT or other psychiatric nurses whilst there - perhaps half a day. I believe some of my colleagues recently took part in a videoconference and a great deal of amusement was caused by British and Australian perceptions of what constitutes a long distance!

I work for a mental health corporation that manages psychiatric services for 3 other affiliated organizations and 1 psychiatric unit in a general hospital in the city of Jacksonville. I am the Director, Quality Improvement/Risk Management and the Safety Officer. I have worked in various positions in mental health over the past 20 years and really enjoy the community mental health service with adult schizophrenics. I don't write to the list often but do review the current threads. The list has provided me a lot of insightful ideas to bring back to our organizations. The list that was developed by the group on alternatives to seclusion/restraints was pulled together by me and is shared with our new employees during orientation. Thank you for being there and having such open discussions about psychiatric nursing care.

Our unit contains a four bed High Dependancy unit. I hold an honourary position with the School of Health science at the University of Tasmania as a Clinical Tutor. I am also the secretary of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses (ANZCMHN) and am a Fellow of the College.

  I started nursing at 17, RMN and then went on to do RGN and went straight back to psych nursing(I realised where my forte lay!) and have done that for the past 18 years. Spent most of my time working in Glasgow, Scotland in various psychiatric settings. Also worked as a prison nurse for 6 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I immigrated to New Zealand and have been working in Gisborne for the past 2 and a half years. I currently work in the Psychiatric Assessment and Triage Team. My interests include Forensic and Prison Nursing.

Our clients have a learning disability, some very mild, others more severe. The clients that I currently work with are all detained for various offences under the MHA. I have a special interest in Self-harm and suicide, stress and anxiety. Womens issues are also a subject I am intersted in, also issues surrounding offending behaviour. I have been in the Learning Disability field since 1974, and seen a lot of changes, and am always searching for new information.I like this site, as it gives me a very useful source of further information, as well as plenty of networking!

  I am an occupational therapist in Doncaster, with a split role, working in an assertive outreach team half the week, and as a research and support worker (on secondment) for the rest. I'm interested in a wide range of mental health issues, especially where these relate to the needs of people with chronic illnesses. My past studies have concerned the relationship between internal migration and mental health, uses of community publication activities with mental health clients and aspects of gender in the occupational therapy profession in addressing mental health issues.

  I work in Philadelphia in the US. I currently teach Psychiatric nursing in a diploma program. I have an MSN in Nursing Administration, and have been working as a psych nurse for 27 years. Currently on the job market (AGAIN!) because there's an unfortunate trend in the US that is leading some schools to eliminate or decrease the Psych nursing rotations. Have worked for several managed care organizations and hospitals in case managment/utilization review and Risk Management. I have been drawn to working in mental health nursing because of an aunt with schizophrenia, and my own experiences recovering from years of childhood sexual abuse. I'm looking forward to chatting with you, because it sounds like there is much diversity in experiences among countries. I have special interests in Mood disorders, suicidality, self-injury, families of the mentally ill and survivors of suicide. In addition, I have a special place in my heart for survivors of the Holocaust, and !
have found these people to have many life lessons to offer me

  Ageing psych nurse like many of us. I live in Townsville, Tropical North Queensland where I attempt, usually unsuccessfully, to direct psychiatric mental health nursing. I am interested in far too many things, including the nursing reclamation of everyday psychotherapy, clinical supervision and the politics of coercion. We are in the preliminary stages of Tidal Model implementation here and excited about that.

Before nursing I worked in the theatre and spent quite a lot of time homeless as a result. So I went and got a proper job instead.

I have been doing this job for a wee while now and my interests are in a Person-centred approach to nursing, Problem Based Learning and the use of Managed Learning Environments (i.e. on computer) in nurse education. I am currently not doing a PhD and probably never will. The main love of my life, apart from my partner, is a shiny, new Triumph Bonneville.

  I am a mental health nurse from Germany, got a registration as mental and genaral nurse as well as a degree in nursing. I worked in different places mostly psychiatric wards (in Germany and once in Edinburgh).
Currently I hold a post as clinical nursing specialist at a general hospital with psychiatric unit. There I work partielly as CPN and partially teaching (in-house-training), facilitating projects and developing concepts. I did a small qualitative research project about perceptions of out-patients in mental heath and their interaction with mental health professionals.

My particular interest is in psychological interentions in their widest context, and how every contact between nurse-client can be used for therapeutic purposes, and therfore benefit the client. I am also interested in attachment theory, and how the 'attachment styles' of acute inpatient wards may influence the re-admission rates.
