Course 3

Teaching staff:  Dermot Bowler

Times of Meetings:  Tuesdays 10.10-11.00

Location:  Room W412

Please note, attendance at tutorials is compulsory.  Failure to attend more than two consecutive sessions without explanation will result in the initiation of withdrawal proceedings.

First year tutorials serve several purposes.  Their pastoral function is to allow you to become well-acquainted with one member of academic staff.  It is important that you develop a relationship of trust with your personal tutor, as it is the tutor who represents you to the university and who acts as your advocate in cases where you may be called to account for poor performance or when you need to plead extenuating circumstances. Your tutor will also write references for you when you apply for jobs or for postgraduate courses. Further details on the pastoral role of the tutor can be found in the Student Handbook.

Tutorials also serve the purpose of guiding you into university study by means of exercises such as essay and report writing, textual analysis, evaluation of laboratory reports, oral presentations etc.  The feedback you receive from your tutor and fellow students on your performance during tutorials will prove invaluable in helping you to perform well on coursework and in examinations.
