My main area of
research is into
psychological
processes in
individuals with
autistic spectrum
disorders. The
overall perspective
is developmental in which I view
basic psychological
processes such as
attention,
perception, learning
and memory as
operating over time
to create the
developmental
trajectory we call
autism. Such an
approach leads me to
be sceptical about
claims that autism
results from deficient modular
systems that are
dedicated to
high-level processes
such as
understanding other
minds. I would argue
that given that some
people with
autism have
difficulties with
mental state
understanding, we
need to ask what
processes give rise
to such
understanding, and
in what ways
are they impaired in
autism. There
are three current
strands to my
research.
