According to the 'Appeal to Doctors' issued in Tonus Journal 493 in December 1971, MSF was set up by 'volunteers determined to break down all barriers and borders that still stand between those whose vocation is to save and to heal and the victims of human barbarity or natural disasters, tsunamis, earthquakes and other catastrophes that afflict countries that are often least able to cope.'
