Notes

  1. Automatic promotion of champions (indicated by '1 pr' or '1 prom') is subject to acceptance by the higher league: the criteria on which the higher league decides are set out before the decision is made and usually involve stadium capacity (total and seated), facilities and financial viability.
  2. Where the number of promotions is given as *, this indicates that no automatic right to promotion exists and that acceptance is entirely at the discretion of the higher league.
  3. Where no figure is given for the number of promotions it is normally to be understood that clubs from the lower league desiring a higher level of competition are welcome to apply to the higher league.
  4. The number to be relegated is a maximum figure. SL and IL relegate very few teams: resignations for financial or other reasons tend to release enough places to keep the turnover rate at a reasonable level.
  5. Facilities in the Northern League {NL} are sometimes primitive. For this reason teams relegated from NP are usually assigned to either NW or NE (unless the team entered the NP from the NL).
